Mixthesia is an exploratory project focused on discovering intuitive interactions in VR that introduce novice musicians to sound mixing tools and concepts. Sound mixing is an arcane craft performed in closed-off rooms for extended periods of time through a complex interface. By prototyping different visualizations and interactions, the project aims to demystify the craft of sound mixing by avoiding the complex traditional interface.

As the Artist on the team, I created everything players see and interact with other than the UI. This included creating 3D models such as a Cathedral wireframe for our Reverb prototype, along with many shaders to deliver our ethereal art direction into the experience.

Our main goal was to explore sound mixing in VR from a teaching perspective. There are VR DAWs that essentially allow you to interact with 2D screens within VR space, but we felt like there is a better way to utilize VR to teach players. DAWs are very complex to a newcomer, so trying to teach the concepts used in DAWs could help to alleviate some of the initial paralysis that myself and the team experienced when first trying them out.
